Character: Merlin
Series: The Sword in the Stone/Kingdom Hearts
Version: Video Game with bits pulled from the movie
Age: Very old man
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Not interested
Appearance: Merlin is a lanky old man in baggy blue robes and a tall, blue wizard’s cap. He has a long white beard contrasted with his short white hair that gets messy rather easily; he is constantly combing it back with his hand and adjusting his crooked hat to look more professional. A pair of small, round glasses perch at the end of his nose. He usually carries a short, wooden rod that serves as his wand.
Personality: Merlin is generally kind to most people, especially those that need his aid. However, he isn’t exactly known for his patience and can seem a bit crabby after that patience wears thin. He also seems to be proud of the fact that he is a “grumpy old man.”
Merlin is also very interested in learning about new things and also teaching people new things, usually his lessons are practical and when you have completed them you will not only have learned something new about the world around you but about yourself as well. So, he fits the other ‘old man’ stereotype as well in that he is extremely wise, not only because of all that he has seen but all that he has been through and read about as well. The wizard definitely has a love for learning, spreading knowledge, and education in general.
Despite being a wizard he does understand that certain things can never be solved with magic alone, it takes brains. In fact, he tends to go into rants about this if you let him…or about anything relating to magic or knowledge in general.
Abilities: He’s said so himself but Merlin is an “all powerful wizard.” Magic covers a wide range of areas but Merlin’s magic is definitely of the good variety (meaning white magic). He can cast elemental spells (ice, fire, lightening, etc), practical spells (making things clean themselves, disappearing and reappearing at will, making things shrink), and perhaps one of his most known tricks is the ability to turn himself and others into various creatures (birds, fish, squirrels, etc). He’s also been known to see into the future, not everything, but general things. Considering he taught Sora a lot of spells, I’d go so far as to say he can also cast spells for healing as well as some of the spells he used in the first game. Really, most of his spells are left up to the imagination of the wizard.
Of course, Merlin would not be half as great of a wizard if it wasn’t for his wits. He is quite sly and knows how to handle most situations because of his vast knowledge. His magic would be useless if he didn’t have the brains to back it up.
Merlin’s only weapon is probably the short staff he uses for a wand…and maybe his infinite storage carpetbag (if that would count as a weapon…the sugar bowl inside is pretty vicious).
As mentioned several times already, Merlin’s true strength is in his head. He is extremely smart and very well educated. He has traveled to many worlds and times and seen many things.
Weaknesses: For starters, Merlin is old and as such, he’s not very strong physically. Sure, he can probably take a hit better than most old timers can but don’t expect him to be relying on his fists for anything. Merlin also has a rather short temper and doesn’t handle “nonsense” very well…or perhaps a better word is ignorance. He just cannot stand people being “in the dark” and if you express any sign of ignorance be prepared to get a lecture…or a rant. He can also be a little absent minded, he knows a lot so sometimes it takes awhile to pull up the relevant information…or remember what he was doing since he can see into the future and might get times mixed up.
History: Merlin is originally from Olde England, a world where he met a boy named Wart and helped him on the path to becoming King Arthur. Not a lot is known about his time before this, other than the fact that he lived in a hut in the woods before Wart came about. Merlin knew of other worlds, maybe even of the other sorcerer Yen Sid and King Mickey, but this relationship is shrouded in the mystery of the past and at the time of King Mickey’s training under Yen Sid, Merlin was focusing on his own task with Wart.
Merlin was called away from his world, however, when trouble started brewing in Radiant Garden. He met a few of the residents there just before the world was lost…and their memories of Radiant Garden were change to that of Hollow Bastion, a dark world that crumbled and fell to Darkness. Merlin was sent with the rest of those refugees to Traverse Town. Knowing the key bearer at some point would need him in the future, Merlin set up a safe house behind an enchanted door so that Sora would only be able to reach him when the time was right. Sora eventually did come to him and Merlin enjoyed interacting with him and the king’s men, Goofy and Donald. He helped them to learn the ability to summon others as well as more magic.
When the worlds were set, right again, Merlin wound up back in Hollow Bastion with Leon and the others. He set up a house where the Restoration Crew used as a base of sorts in dealing with the Heartless and Nobodies. When he was reunited with Sora he discovered that his former pupil had forgotten a lot of his magic (due to events in CoM) so he taught him Blizzard again.
Merlin isn’t as stationary at this point and is eventually summoned to help Sora at Disney Castle when Maleficent invades it. He can’t get rid of Maleficent’s spell but he can set up a portal to the past in order to deal with the case of it.
Things start to get worse in Hollow Bastion as the MCP in the old castle starts to take control of the defense grid. Despite his rivalry with Cid, Merlin helps create a special program that helps fix it. Merlin doesn’t play much of a role after that, giving advice of course but he can only help Sora so much. Merlin seems to realize his calling is elsewhere when he stumbles upon a curious looking gate…
